There are big things happening in the world, it’s more important than ever to be intentional about the art we consume. By uplifting our local, provincial, and national artists and storytellers, we help sustain the creative voices that shape our communities.

Here are 9 ways to support arts and culture right here at home in Nelson, BC:

1. Shop local

Visit indie bookstores, used bookstores, music stores, art supply stores, artisan markets, and craft fairs. Buy directly from artists whenever possible.

2. Buy Your Music

If possible, buy directly from musicians – CDs and vinyl are making a comeback. Look for online platforms that allow you to support artists directly.

3. Tune in to local radio

Stations like Kootenay Co-op Radio bring independent voices to the airwaves and highlight our homegrown musicians.

4. Use your public library

Nelson Public Library is a treasure trove for books, e-books, and audiobooks and more!

5. Rethink your streaming habits

Nelson Civic Theatre has an incredible collection of DVDs for rent at Reo’s Video. We also have some fantastic Canadian streaming options available to us.

6. Visit galleries and museums

These are places where we can learn more about the many layers of our communities. Many, like Nelson Museum, Archives & Gallery even offer free events!

7. Take an arts class

Whether it’s dance, writing, music, theatre, or visual arts, local educators have so much to offer. Check out artist-run centres like Oxygen Arts Centre as a starting point.

8. Attend live events

Concerts, festivals, movies, and performances bring us together. Let us know your favourites in the comments!

9. And most of all… make more art!

Creativity helps us process, connect, and find meaning in uncertain times. We need local, regional, provincial, and national stories at the forefront right now.

This list is only a starting point and every small choice adds up. Let’s celebrate and sustain the artists and arts organizations who enrich our lives every day.
